Dear readers,

We would love to go to Koh Samui next week. However, we have been told that at that time (March) there are many mistral winds and a visit to this beautiful island should be planned at a different time.

Can you tell us more about this please?

Yours faithfully,

Greta

Mistral is unique to the south of France, and a typical Mediterranean phenomenon there. I can give you my personal guarantee that this does not occur on Samui.

Mistral wind in Thailand is, in my opinion, just as special a phenomenon as Northern Lights in Bali.
If you do notice the effect of the low pressure area above the Gulf of Genoa (Italy) in the Gulf of Thailand (Samui), the wind will mainly be very strong.

    You probably mean the Monsoon.
Look for information on climateinfo.nl and then read this.

Ko Samui essentially has two seasons. The warm and tropical part of the year has a short rainy season. Unlike Phuket and most of the rest of southern Thailand, which has a 6-month rainy season between May and November, Samui's weather is relatively dry for the vast majority of the year, with the rainy season being mainly confined to November . Samui has two rainy seasons, one of the normal ones lasting from May to August, just like in the rest of this part of Thailand. The second usually starts in October, and is part of the monsoon season. These rains are very heavy and last a long time, staying here until December. In the normal rainy season, relatively little rain falls here compared to the rest of Thailand. In the rainy season, tropical depressions and hurricanes should also be taken into account.

But here too the climate changes and a climate is not something you can set the clock to.

Mistral winds only exist in southern France. No strong winds on Koh Samui at the moment.

After last week's full moon, it's a bit rainy on Samui and Phangan...it rains now and then, and it's especially windy in the north of both islands, with the result: high waves...ferries that depart from Nathon instead of Maenam or Bangrak
It is busy now on Samui.. We especially notice the busy roads.
Hopefully next week will be a bit better, but keep an eye on the weather reports.
    Have a nice holiday…from Maenam

Nowhere do you have a claim to guarantee or certainty with regard to the weather, which is why the following only consists of an average observation.
The rainy season on Koh Samui lasts from the end of September to December, with the so-called major rainy season, from October and November, often accompanied by violent storms and heavy rain, so that the streets are often flooded and public traffic is also has difficulties. From January to about the end of March, the island is usually well suited for a holiday, except for a small rain shower, which is usually not disturbing. From June comes the so-called short rainy season, which lasts until about mid-July, and from that time until September it is also good to stay on the island, where a small rain shower is always possible. Most people who have never been to the tropics immediately think of permanent cooling and weather changes when it rains, and this is of course not the case. Personally I would say March is not a bad month to holiday on Koh Samui, while others who may have had some bad luck would advise against this, although the average perception is different.
Have fun and a little bit of luck, which you need everywhere.
    John.

I live on Samui and can tell you that normally January to April is the best time to visit Samui weather wise. It is basically a dry period, although it rained a lot today and yesterday :o) A bit of wind now and then, but I wouldn't stay home for that.
April and May can be very hot.
However, the weather has been quite messed up in recent months (El Ninjo??) and the height of the sea is more than a meter higher than normal.

Indeed Mistral does not appear here …. I have been on the island since February 10 and the weather is changeable. We have now had a lot of rain again and the weather forecast does not say much good yet.

Also strong wind, stormy! I'm not used to that here and the guests who have been here for a long time also complain about it. From January this is the 3rd week that it is very rainy … .. Maybe it will be over after this! I would say, also look at "the weather on Samui" that also provides data.

Just got back from 2 months Koh Samui.
Where I didn't see a drop of rain last year in February and March (stayed there for 3 months), this year February was very rainy with sometimes very heavy rain showers, lots of clouds and a lot of strong wind..... Climate change?
It remains a very beautiful destination, and the temperature is a nice 28/30 degrees.
Who knows, March will remain dry and wind-free? I certainly wouldn't stay home.

We are now in Bangkok, fleeing the rain, last Saturday. Even from 7.00:14.00 to XNUMX:XNUMX non-stop after four days of rain, we were done with it.
Because dry is not bad temperature remains ok and you can do something. But it's impossible to do with rain.
I'd keep an eye on the wwers and change plans if not. (Koh Lanta). We have been there for the past 5 years during this period and always had good weather.

Unfortunately, you don't get a guarantee on the weather and no one can change anything about it.
