Insurance statement from Ethias or Europ Assistance for Thailand Pass?
Posted in Reader question
Tags: English language insurance statement, Thailand pass
Dear readers,
I have read that Thailand now also requires a minimum medical insurance of $50.000 to travel to the country and to obtain the Thailand Pass. After research, it appears that this only applies up to the age of 75. I'll be 74 next month so that would mean I could only travel to Thailand with that Thai insurance for one more year!
Now I already have a family insurance that would also apply during my travels with Ethias and the age limit would be unlimited and also the medical costs are unlimited so it is not clearly stated that it is $50.000 or more.
My question now: if I ask Ethias for an English statement stating that “unlimited medical expenses” would it be accepted upon arrival in Thailand? The same goes for insurance with Europ Assistance.
Regards,
John (BE)

Dear,
I also took out insurance with ethias after I
read on a blog that this was definitely possible.
Also with an English certificate that clearly states that
the medical costs including covid-19 are covered for an amount of EUR 500.000.
Hi Brian,
500.000 euros is a lot! I think you mean 50.000 USD.
No, for 68 euros for a full year, covered for 500.000 euros and with an English certificate, which clearly states that you are covered for that amount against medical costs / hospitalization including covid-19.
And repatriation in case of illness/accident etc..
I'm not leaving for Thailand until next year, so of course I don't know if this will be approved, but otherwise I wouldn't know anymore.
It is always misleading when you read that you are covered for a “full year”
There are some, but not at that price.
Despite being an annual policy, they cover stays of up to 90 days per trip. If you want to stay longer you have to pay additional premiums and that is also the case here. So keep that in mind. But nothing wrong with that. Great for stays up to 90 days and also longer if you pay for that additional period.
What if I am away from home for more than 90 consecutive days?
The “Assistance Family on an annual basis” and “Assistance Car & Family” formulas insure you for a maximum stay abroad of 90 days.
Do not panic. You can combine the Assistance Family on an annual basis or the Assistance Car & Family with the Temporary Assistance Family.
What does this travel insurance not cover?
Medical costs in Belgium
Costs that arise because you are under the influence of alcohol or other products with an intoxicating effect
Costs arising from pre-existing conditions before your departure
Accidents abroad that occur later than 90 days after your departure. Are you away from home for more than 90 days?
https://www.ethias.be/part/nl/verzekeringen/vrije-tijd/reisverzekering-reisbijstand.html
To be complete, I paid Ethias assistance for a whole year something like 400 euros a few years ago, after 11 months I came back 1 month. If I had unused months it would be paid back, but never happened.
It is 45 Euro per started period of 30 days and then you come close to that 400 Euro
Still, be careful with alcohol and pre-existing conditions before you leave because they are excluded.
We have done it with Touring's travel insurance (roughly the same as VAB) Downloaded and attached a proof from the website in English.
A good question, I am in the same situation at Ethias. A good idea to ask them in English. The comment Touring also good because it is “free” with my car. We should also not forget to consult some insurance policies linked to credit cards. ladies wiser. We add them all, certainly can't hurt.
Hopefully, Ethias will also cover the hospital costs if you test positive and have no symptoms…or if 1 or both of the fellow passenger(s) sitting next to you test positive and you test negative, because then you also have to sweat out a 10-day quarantine in a hospital? …. A Thai insurance would cover this…..
