Reader question: Where in Bangkok can I buy boxed orchids?

Dear readers,

I will go to Thailand again on May 11 and take home a lot of flowers every time at the flower market. This goes reasonably well by keeping them a bit wet on the way, but at home they are at most two weeks.

I have read that you can also buy them in a box at the flower market. Only they don't speak English there so I can't figure it out. At the airport they are quite expensive and at the flower market a whole bunch for 1,25 euros.

Could someone tell me where I can buy orchids in a box?

Thanks in advance,

Carla

You can pick them up at the airport before you leave!! PLEASE NOTE that the gel they are in is still white in color!!
You can get cuttings, repot them immediately when you get home. Or you can get regular ones in a box without root.

Carla does not want to buy the orchids at the airport (they are much too expensive there).

Given the question, it is about buying flowers in Bangkok and the airport is not part of Bangkok in my opinion.

The Netherlands produces orchids in large quantities and also exports to Thailand… Just so you know…

I also buy the orchids at the flower market and they pack it in a box, just ask the shops that are also there and indicate whether it will work on a note in Thai, for sure. We do it ourselves so it shouldn't be a problem. Much success will certainly succeed.

It's a nice idea to bring orchids, but don't let them get you at Schiphol!
    Warning man counts for two!!!

No problem, I could just take them with me. I had received them once, I even received a super bouquet from Thai friends, no problem!

When I used to come to BKK as a steward, I brought home orchids almost every time. These lasted about 4 weeks or more. I always ordered them upon arrival at the airport and before we left the man with the orchids was waiting for us.
Unfortunately I don't have his address, but I do have another address, which I expect the quality to be just as good: Prapai Orchid, Silom Road, Phone: 02 234 8174 or 02 235 3385. He offers orchids in 3 different boxes , the prices will be between 500 and 1200 Baht.

    Just a warning:
Do not bring orchids with roots, I was fined 845 euros a few years ago
According to customs at Schiphol, they were protected flowers, they were ordinary orchids bought on the market for 50 baht.
Letting it come out got the short end of the stick in court.

Prohibition to import into the EU. There are heavy fines for that. Be warned !!

    Carl:

I have a solution for you…. buy an orchid box in Thailand and take it empty to the Netherlands and then put Dutch orchids in it. Nothing to worry about and those orchids also stay fresh much longer... A little more expensive 😉

Yes plants with roots and seeds are not allowed. Fortunately I found out in time and gave them away to the chambermaid who was very happy with it besides her tip! We were also once arrested at Schiphol for something else. Customs didn't want to know anything about it because we were tired. We paid a fine and filed a protest and got everything back. Were very rude about this also filed a complaint, but stay calm yourself then they will get the short end of the stick. We later learned that he was fired for being rude to several passengers.

If Carla brings orchids that can only be kept for two weeks, they will have been taken without roots. There is no prohibition on that. Well on some orchids and those are not the flowers you can buy that way. So dear people, don't immediately panic or want to be smart. You can just take them with you. And believe me, I should know, because I was always checked more strictly than a normal passenger.

Henk is right, there are fines on it, just look at the site of the customs and tax authorities, you can take them with you, but then there must be papers, see the site of the customs and tax authorities.
It is the same if you bring tulips or bulbs from the Netherlands to America only with a certificate.
Perhaps it is also useful to e-mail them if there is something then you have the answer at hand or call and record it then you will be firmly in your shoes if you are arrested.

The same site of the tax authorities says that you can, for example, bring 5 bunches of flowers or up to 5 fruit from a non-EU country without a physio …. some certificate. Let's just say they couldn't make it easier. As an airline consumer, it's not easy at all. I regularly saw crew from eg BA carrying boxes full of orchids. The boxes with Orchids for sale at Bangkok Suvar… do have a sticker with some countries not wanting them. I left them in good shape because of the price.

There are hundreds of orchid species.
Try to find out which are and are not allowed .
I myself smuggled some from the Isaan that were not allowed to be transported in Thailand.
My girlfriend has a tap to grow them that she says yield 2000.-Thb per plant.
She sometimes gives these away for friends and acquaintances at a festive occasion.
There are also those for 20.- Thb that are allowed.
If you don't understand it, stay away from it to avoid trouble.
In the meantime I see more Orchids than I would like, fortunately when she is busy with those things early in the morning I can watch the world turn.

    Hi Carla,

When we didn't live here yet and therefore stayed in The Royal Cliff, we always received a box of orchids when we went home.
The stems were in those little plastic tubes filled with water and a plastic cap with a hole that fits 1 or 2 stems, which you can also use when making a flower arrangement.
Came just as fresh as we got them and still enjoyed them for a few weeks.
Will also have to do with the freshness of the orchids I think.
The white/purple ones are the strongest.

You can keep those shells and take them with you when you go to Thailand again and put those things in the water yourself, then you know for sure that they are still beautiful when you return home.

And just pontifically on top of the baggage bale at Schiphol and have never had any problems at customs.

    Good luck,

    LOUISE

      Again Carla,

Go to the address that Sjaak gives at 10.58 am and ask for those plastic cases if they are not around.
And you enjoy it for a long time.

    Hello Carla,

Your question about buying Orchids in a box, I also did it and then took it to the Netherlands, it can be done at the flower market in Bangkok, if you are a bit familiar with Bangkok not far from Indiantown. I am currently living in Bangkok and can help you if necessary, My Thai is not very good but I can make myself understood there, The orchids were with my parents in the Netherlands for almost 5 weeks, the branches are individually placed in small plastic tubes done and around that also cotton wool. You can always contact via Thailandblog, there we have my address otherwise my number in Bangkok 08-44636136 Good luck
    Anja

Anja, at the flower market where there are also shops, they understand English. If the flowers grabs and makes gestures when they don't understand and you point to a box, it will certainly work. When it's my birthday in Bangkok, I also get beautiful flowers there and the roses are beautiful. Even in Chiang mai we buy flowers at the market and a vase they make it beautiful and not expensive. That is our gift for our Thai friends because they don't buy roses too expensive. Upon receipt, she takes one that goes as an offering to the Buddha statue they have in the shop.

Thanks for all your responses. I think I've been taking orchids to the flower market for 10 years, just those bunches of 100 bath without root, white, purple tables full, they're there on the street. Just in a plastic bag and then usually 5 to 6 bunches.
I have never been checked at customs, only in October 2013 in Dusseldorf. Couldn't contain myself and had 4 full bags in hand luggage that went well. And I don't know what came over me, I could actually go on like this, but I was stupid enough to ask anyway, when she agreed, no problem. I walked on then he called me back, go ask him. stupid stupid of me. even more customs, books included, which types they were. What do you mean species I know a lot just liked them, they are for my mother-in-law she me. certificate then, unfortunately they don't have that on the market, I say. To make it short, I was finally allowed to take them with me, but better with a certificate next time. Just put it in a bag and they won't look at it.
    hello carla
