Dear readers,

A question regarding the validity of your passport, how long should your passport be valid when you leave Thailand and return? I am Belgian, retired and living in Thailand. Have an extension based on pension.

All info is welcome.

Georgio

A Belgian passport must be valid for at least another 6 months upon planned/booked return from Thailand.

But in your case it is an extended stay. Perhaps it is best to inquire at the Belgian embassy if possible. I don't know if that 6-month rule also applies here. Prevention is better than cure.

Applying for a new passport at the embassy is possible under certain conditions. For example, if I am not mistaken, you must be registered in the embassy as a Belgian residing in Thailand. You should also take into account that it can take days or weeks before you actually receive your new passport.

To be clear, this information is what I personally assume. I haven't done any additional research. I therefore expressly advise you to contact the Belgian embassy in Bangkok (as soon as possible).

If you return to Belgium as a Belgian, an expired passport is sufficient. They really can't and won't refuse you.

But to be honest, the question is not entirely clear.

If your Belgian travel passport has expired and you still have a Belgian identity card, I don't see any problem! Even if both documents have expired ….. even then you cannot be refused to leave. You may then have to deal with an ignorant person at the check-in desk who does not know what to do and is only fixated on the validity date of the passport and ID card. It is therefore best to ask the question to the embassy so that you can always show them their answer if problems should arise during check-in!!

Sorry, these types of questions tend to provoke responses from people who may know, or think they know, so that by the end of the discussion, you're still not sure.
Why not just a phone call, or an E-mail to the Belgian Embassy, and you have 100% certainty.

An expired passport is equivalent to a NON-existing passport.

@steven. They will not refuse you in Belgium or NL. Legally they are NOT going to let you leave in Thailand. I know from experience that sometimes $ 100 is put between the passport to close the eyes of passport control. I have seen these situations in the Domin.rep by expats whose Belgian passport has expired. There is the possibility to collect a special document (for a fee) at the embassy (of Belgium or nl) to travel to the country of origin. Again .. an expired passport is no longer legally a passport. Legally they can refuse you because you no longer have a passport . The course of events may be slightly different.

The question is how long should a passport be valid on departure from Thailand and entry? The question is not at all about whether a passport has already expired. Even a passport that expires in 3 to 4 months is still a valid passport when you leave the country. Only if you re-enter Thailand, you must be in possession of a passport that is valid for at least 6 months. At the end of this discussion, you may get 20 responses from which you have to guess if one is correct, while a phone call or an E-Mail to the Belgian Embassy will surely give you the correct answer.

If you make 'legal' 'possible' you are right.

When “traveling out” from Belgium, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months, otherwise you simply will not leave.
When “traveling out of Thailand” you only need a valid passport.
Regarding immigration: you will never get a visa in Thailand, and you need one if you want to stay for 6 months, which exceeds the validity of your passport. So if you want to “travel out” with an expired passport, you already have a problem because you will automatically have an overstay because you have not received a visa longer than the validity period of your passport.
A new passport at the embassy is only possible if you are registered at the embassy and that does not take months but about 10-14 days. The embassy can provide you with a “temporary passport” if you are not registered, but you will have to give a good explanation why you have exceeded the validity period, as they know that you will also have other problems in this case. They can NOT help you with these problems with immigration and you will first have to solve them (pay the fine) before you can leave, with the temporary passport, to Belgium.
Letting your passport expire is asking for big trouble.

no problem. Went home two years ago with an expired passport, I didn't know it myself, but determined when checking correspondence after a stay of 8 months in Thailand. They only ask for a passport. Just requested back in Belgium, no problem

Deregistered in Belgium, registered at the embassy in Bangkok.
On 30.09. In 2014 I left for Belgium, my passport and “Retirement Visa” expired on 09.02.15.
Came back to Thailand on 04.01.2015.
Go, no problem, I left for Belgium, with a valid passport..
Back, no problem, my “RV” was valid until 09.02.15.
