Dear readers,
We intend to go to Thailand again in November 2015, to Phuket Patong Beach. However, we have been informed that on the beaches of Patong Beach, among others, there are no more beach beds and umbrellas available. When I go to Google I only see comments from September 2014 and later, but I can't find anywhere what the situation is now and what it will look like in November 2015.
Since we are both no longer the youngest, this is of considerable importance, as we no longer feel like sitting on a towel and without an umbrella on the beach.
Hopefully you can give us an answer or point us to something where we can make our decision to go to Thailand.

Been to Patong in January 2015. You can simply rent beach chairs. They are not now 5 rows thick on the beach, but they get it for you from a storage facility somewhere. Personally, I think it's gotten better. It had become too commercial. Now it is back to normal 'proportions'. You see more of the beach and the surrounding area.
You can just sit under the trees at the beach. So nothing wrong. Gr Rob

It is true that there are limited umbrellas and sunbeds available to prevent corruption, because before people were obliged to rent an umbrella or sunbed and had to pay ridiculously much for it and the beach is free for everyone, not just for the locals who are trying to squeeze you out, it would be cheaper if you buy a parasol and lounger there for those weeks and they cannot force you to rent a set of theirs

It is not possible to rent a beach chair on all of Phuket and certainly not in Patong.
Beach chairs and umbrellas brought along are confiscated by the army.
In Patong you can rent a plastic mat and parasol at places designated by the authorities on the beach. However, jet ski rental companies have been given priority with regard to sun worshippers.
It is true that the army has put an end to corrupt practices regarding rental of beach furniture.
However, for real beach lovers it is a considerable decline.
Yesterday I was on Surin beach > a deserted plain except for a few perseverants, of course it's low season, but I've never experienced this in the many years that I visited Phuket and now live.

There is indeed no lounger to be seen, it is also nice and quiet in Patong at the moment.
What is a nice boost, the beach and the sea are clean. Now you can walk around without shoes or slippers. Also no annoying people with the well-known offers of hammocks, ice cream drinks and so on. It just depends on where you prefer, bustle, noise, dirt and beds, whether super clean and quiet plus a clean environment. I'm for the 2nd, a combination of the 2 would be nice but seems not possible.

I have been living in Patong for quite some time. There are no more sunbeds for rent, but you can rent a mountain of sand where they put 2 mats that used to be on the beds for 100 baht, if you want a parasol it costs another 100 baht. As of today, signs have also been posted stating that you are no longer allowed to smoke or use food in certain zones. By the way, this is not only in Patong, but throughout Phuket. Saddening.

Last April on Patong beach there were no beach chairs, only the 5 cm mats, which were raised with sand at the head end. Parasols also available. I think if you are used to sitting on a raised seat…then the mat will certainly disappoint you. Surin beach the same.
It is more pleasant and quiet there.
I was in Patong in May, I think it's fine…., at least the beach looks like a beach again. I think you can still rent a chair and umbrella to a limited extent, you can still rent chairs on Paradise Beach, although these do not stand on the beach right on the sea, but slightly to the rear. I have also been to Surin Beach, which is a great beach, not busy, but with the allure of a tropical beach. I loved it but if you go with the idea that you will find a closed row of beach chairs and umbrellas then you will be disappointed.

Just got home from a 3 month vacation in Phuket. Precisely you can no longer rent beach seats has its advantages and disadvantages. Another alternative can help you Cozy apartment with very nice swimming pool and garden at 10 minutes walk from the sea. Highly recommended.

Last February I went to Patong, which I found terrible, but this aside.
It was impossible then, eating and smoking was also forbidden?? I would say fly on to Koh Lanta, buy a bed there or go to a resort where there are beds.
It is also Thailand as Thailand was. I've been coming there for over 20 years now, had never been to Phuket and now I know why not.

Koh Lanta has no airport, so you will have to fly to Krabi and then take a bus to Lanta.

I went to Karon Beach last April, there are some beds (actually stretchers) for rent. These may not be placed on the water's edge. The cost for 2 beds + umbrella is 300 Baht. Or you could use plastic mattresses, which used to be on the sunbeds, but these are then on the sand.
