The consequences of the floods Thailand become more and more dramatic. A shortage of food and water has arisen in the capital Bangkok, because supermarkets are no longer supplied.

Many residents leave for the south, where there are no floods. Cor Verhoef, who teaches English at a drama school in Bangkok, has also left the capital and is now 100 kilometers east of Bangkok. “We are high and dry in a house we have rented.”

Verhoef fled the city “because of the contradictions information that the government gives”. “Facts are omitted, mainly to save the faces of the dignitaries,” says Verhoef.

“Each time it appears that parts of the city are flooded, which were previously considered safe by the government,” says the Dutchman.

Stores

In Bangkok, the consequences of the floods are very noticeable. “Many stores are closed and the stores that are open have empty shelves and are no longer stocked,” says Verhoef. "My house is dry, but if you can't do your shopping, it's difficult."

It's in October holiday in Bangkok, but due to the floods, Verhoef does not think he will soon be back in the classroom. “Schools are closed until further notice. Officially I have to start again on November 7, but that will probably be postponed.”

New tidal wave

In 21 Thai regions, schools and government buildings will remain closed for the next few days. The government wants to keep people indoors as much as possible in flooded areas, because it is dangerous outside.

The floods were caused by heavy showers in the north of the country. Another tidal wave is expected in Bangkok next week.
