A curious fishbowl in Bangkok

Near Khao San Road in Bangkok, at the corner of the Banglamphu intersection, is a four-story building that was once the New World shopping mall. The building has no roof, is totally abandoned and ready for demolition. The basement of the building has been flooded with water due to rainfall and now serves as a fishbowl for thousands of fish.

How it is that so many fish live in that cellar is a different story. In the 80s, the company Kaew Fah Plaza Co. Ltd. the New World mall as an 11-storey building. However, the original building plan provided for only four floors, so that the 7 floors built above were illegal.

The mall was therefore closed by the government in 1997 and the owner was ordered to bring the building into line with the original design. There have been some unfortunate incidents since then, such as a lit fire in 1999 which caused casualties and one person was killed in 2004 by a collapse during the demolition of the upper part of the building.

The demolition of the fifth through eleventh floors was completed, trade on the first four floors continued for a while, but eventually the mall was closed and has since been abandoned and roofless, waiting for things to come.

Without a roof, it was not surprising that a large pond of rainwater was created in the basement. It was usually still water, so an ideal place for mosquitoes and other insects. The shop owners and vendors in the area complained about the mosquito infestation and to solve the problem, fish were introduced into that water, which had a nice food source for the mosquitoes and eggs. In no time those fish multiply and now there are literally thousands of fish of many species, such as catfish, koi, goldfish, grouper, carp and in this curious fishbowl.

It looks a bit apocalyptic… nature would take over when humanity would be gone. After the destruction of humanity, you always see the most bizarre creatures in movies, hiding in basements. The reality is much different and more interesting… You could encounter this in such a world.
    Interesting!

Nice story, reminded me of my trip to Chernobyl a few years ago. Gonna try to find this location next week. By the way, my first association with the message was traditional Thai fishbowl massage, must be close there too ;)

Well, it is also an example of corrupt buildings from the real estate crash in the mid-90s.
Know the place, go check it out. When you come out of Khao San Road, direction temple complex, turn right. This complex is located on the corner with the 3rd street on the right (Though Kraisi road).
Just like the wiring on the street, it is a jumble of minimarts and shops, you quickly get out of the compass. But nice to go for a walk anyway.
