A Dutch pensioner in need of money

Thaivisa posted a message on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 about a Dutchman who is said to be in need of money.

The post was taken from a Facebook page and was accompanied by a detailed photo.
The photo, probably taken at an unknown airport in Thailand, shows the man with two signs telling his story. It concerns a 70-year-old Dutch man who claims that all his money (50,000 baht) has been stolen by Thais. He cannot now buy a ticket to the Netherlands, has no family to help him out and the Dutch embassy does not want to lend a helping hand either. He asks passers-by to support him by buying a watch from him, which he has reduced in price from 250 to 200 baht.

At first glance, it is an unlikely story and it even smacks of fake news, but it is of course quite possible that the man got into trouble due to unknown circumstances.

We invite the man to join the editorial ([email protected]) so that he can tell his real story, which can be published on our weblog. If you recognize the man, draw his attention to this invitation.

    October 3, that's over a month ago.
I think this “bird” has long flown.

Is it November already? I think Johank has already started hibernating… It is only October 4…

    Dear editors,

It won't be the first and certainly won't be the last.
I think there are a lot, let's say a lot of foreigners,
with little to no money and a huge overstay.

But the Embassy does indeed; NOTHING.

Nothing? What do you expect them to do then?

They do do something, they act as a mediator or put you in touch with your family. Of course, they will not advance your airline ticket or hospital bill.

      See for example:

What a bs story from that man.
Doesn't he have a return ticket?
As a pensioner, money comes into your account every month.
It seems very simple to me (pensions are paid around the 23rd of each month) to buy a ticket.
50.000 Bath is about € 1600. Has he reported the theft?
I don't see the financial problem.
You can fly to the Netherlands for around € 500.

I'm sorry but who believes that? Joker! Just call the embassy.

      Call the embassy? And then?

Have seen this post on fb before. Personally, I thought it was a strange story. Of course you can get robbed. But that suddenly all your money is stolen is strange. If this man is really 70, he will receive a monthly state pension and possibly a pension.

Looks like he's living somewhere too, doesn't look unkempt. His AOW is probably transferred to a bank here or is in the bank in the Netherlands.

So just ask friends and acquaintances to help him until money has been deposited again. Then quickly buy a ticket and return to the Netherlands.

What an unlikely story! Didn't the man have a return ticket? He does not live in Thailand, because then TBH 50.000 is not enough.
If it were serious, selling a watch for TBH 200 would help. You don't buy a ticket for that.

As Donald T. would say: “fake news”.

He can wait until his state pension and possibly pension has been paid in. He can buy his ticket from that.
This is not pure coffee in my opinion, sorry.

    • Cornelis says up

Maybe he has no state pension at all…………

you see more and more people like this , so ask farang along the way for money with all kinds of excuses , for money , that 's how they earn extra money .
They can just make an arrangement at the Dutch embassy, and then they can go home, but that is not the intention, they think that other foreigners have pity and that way they can get by.

    hello to all those scammers.

    • Cornelis says up

The embassy really won't give you money for a ticket!

      • kees circle says up

Well, I've experienced it myself, all lost money, only my passport was in the safe of the room, I took it to the embassy, they took my passport and paid me a ticket to come home, did it have to be in the Netherlands refund, and got my passport back. tried with KLM but they didn't respond, so I was happy with the help of the Embassy.

        • How long has that been?

        • Ger Korat says up

Well if you experienced it yourself then it was your own fault. Because a holiday to Thaland of a few thousand Euros and then no travel insurance of a few tens. Travel insurer and alarm cebtrale would have helped you.

      • Tino Kuis says up

No, Cornelis, no money. But what they do do is reach out to family, friends and aid agencies. And provide information and advice. That often helps in my experience.

An attractive, much too young woman may have whispered in his ear: “I love you!” The rest can be guessed.

  10. Jack S says up

If, as a Dutchman, he has lived outside the Netherlands for years, it may also be that he has too little income, or not. There is a 2% decrease every year.

Of course I always walk around with 5 watches. Always handy when 4 fail, I still know what time it is.

  12. lung addie says up

Read this story on Thaivisa a few days ago…. with appropriate responses. There, too, there were strong doubts about the true background of the story. It rattles from all sides. And trying to sell watches for 200THB??? He may be looking for a means to be deported because… selling watches is WORK and you need a work permit for that. Who knows, he might be arrested for working illegally in Thailand. Do you have to be 70 years old for such a punch?

    • RonnyLatPhrao says up

Of course I don't know if he is still here legally, but that deportation could well be to a place he would rather not have.

If he is arrested, he will indeed be deported, but whether that will be to the Netherlands is another question. That will only happen when he can pay for a ticket. If he can't afford a ticket, it will likely be a trip to the Immigration Detention Center (IDC) until someone pays for a ticket for him.
That could mean a long wait for him in unpleasant circumstances.

Some with “overstay” rather easily think that “overstay” is not a problem. They think that if they are arrested and cannot afford a ticket, Thailand will deport them by paying them a ticket and putting them on a plane.
They better wake up from that dream quickly, otherwise that will happen in the IDC…

Let's edit the message again. There are 3 possibilities viz:

    1. the man is a holiday maker. He reports that he has lost TBH 50.000. But not that he lost his return ticket. But that remains unclear.
He apparently also went on holiday without travel insurance in this scenario. To buy a new one-way ticket to Amsterdam, he will still have to sell about 75 (!) watches…. Where will he pay for the purchase?

    2. the man did come here with a return ticket, but decided to stay here. So it's illegal here.

    3. the man once entered here with a visa, but was unable to renew it. Probably obtained a visa at the time on the basis of TBH 8 tons on account at the bank. Or a lower amount supplemented with AOW/pension or the like. Much of that TBH 8 tons (or lower) has disappeared in the meantime….. and therefore no visa and therefore have to leave.
But apparently no money to buy a one-way ticket (approx TBH 15.000).

In all cases there is talk of “your own fault, fat ..”.

Just a charlatan, which the Thai government must quickly deal with.
