Army dredges neglected khlongs

How revealing can an interview be without the interviewee being aware of it.

Niphon Panmongkol, head of the Army Engineer Department, confirms what many have said before: the canals in and around Bangkok are severely neglected. And the current dredging work is lagging behind. But Niphon does not utter a single word of criticism.

In a mini interview with Bangkok Post he tells that his department is clearing the Khlong Nang Taen canal of water hyacinth and other weeds. The AED apparently does not have large equipment, because: 'We have to use a backhoe to both deepen and widen the canal so it can receive more water run-off from the North that will be driven out to the sea via the ภาษาไทย Chin river.'

Khlong Nang Taen is one of four channels dredged by the AED. The other three are still to come: Khlong Song Khanong, Khlong Lat Thapa and Khlong Lat Ngew Nai.

South of Bangkok, in the province of Samut Sakhon, Khlong Ma Horn is on the program.

  1. support says up

dredging when the floods are already there? do so outside the rainy season. by the way, it is not only a problem in BKK, but ditches, streams, rivers, canals, etc. are full grown all over Thailand.

but BKK takes the cake: after all, it has been raining for months and only now that the water has arrived at BKK from the north, people go:
    1. closing holes in "dykes" (NB. those holes have been there for a long time)
    2. dredge ditches, rivers, streams and remove vegetation.

    all much, much too late.

when will something like "Rijkswaterstaat" come here? which tackles direction and control nationally. people had already been warned in 2010, but little or nothing happened. I am afraid that people will also think now: this was the worst in 50 years, so that will not happen again soon.

and then it will turn out that the rainy season 2012 will get even worse…. or else 2013.
