This week in our series on Dutch business in Thailand, we put the spotlight on a foundation that tries to make a positive contribution to the development of local farmers in developing countries by establishing profitable production chains: Fair Trade Original.

Fair Trade Original, a Dutch organisation, which has existed since 1959, specializes in fair trade food products. Their wide range of products is sold through supermarkets as well as specialized stores. When purchasing, Fair Trade Original prefers end products that have been produced – as much as possible – in the country of origin

A culinary range has recently been developed in Thailand. Fair Trade Original united a number of chilli pepper farmers, sugar cane farmers, soy farmers and two local processing companies, resulting in a range of Fairtrade products.

This allows these Thai producers to enter the international fair trade market.

At the SIAL food fair in Paris, the (wok) sauces, spice pastes and the world's very first fair trade sambal turned out to be real eye-catchers.

Growth in sales means growth in impact on farmers' organisations. Their fair trade ingredients ensure a good price and an incentive for their development.
