The Ministry of Transport wants to install a facial recognition system at five regional airports. The system replaces manual passport control. There are now often long waiting times for air travelers.

Until now, travelers have to show their ID card or passport three times during the flight, says Secretary of State Thaworn. You only have to do that once with a facial recognition system. A passenger's face only needs to be scanned at the check-in counter. When you arrive at the gate, even showing the boarding pass is no longer necessary.

The new system will not only be available for Thai people, but also for foreigners who take domestic flights. The five airports that will be equipped first are the airports of Krabi, Surat Thani, Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani and Khon Kaen.

A working group consisting of representatives from the Department of Airports, the Royal Thai Police and the Ministry of the Interior will set up the system.

The facial recognition system is part of the 'smart airport project' that aims to make air travel easier and more comfortable.
