A video believed to show police officers beating Burmese prostitutes has sparked outrage in Thailand.

The video on Youtube (as it appears to have been recorded with a mobile phone) shows a group of Burmese sex workers being beaten by a number of men in a room. It is unclear whether the men in question are Thai or Burmese. In any case, the video shows the appalling conditions of Burmese women in the Thai sex industry.

The four-minute video was shown on Thai TV for the first time this week. A voice-over from a Thai newscaster says that the assault was committed by Burmese men and not by Thais. According to the newsreader, these women have misbehaved and are being sent back to Burma. Critics in Thailand believe that they are indeed Thai and possibly even Thai police officers.

An estimated 60 to 18 young Burmese women work in prostitution in Thailand. Many of these women come from Burma's ethnic minorities. It is estimated that XNUMX percent of this group is even younger than XNUMX years.

The women are lured into prostitution with promises of well-paid work. Reality is different. These women often fall prey to human traffickers and pimps. They are used as sex slaves and oppressed by violence.

“Burmese migrants make up the bulk of migrants in Thailand. People are often fleeing military oppression,” human rights organization HumanTrafficking.org said. “The problem is difficult to tackle because of the corruption in Thailand. There are reports of Thai police and immigration officials turning a blind eye in exchange for money or sex. This gives human traffickers and violent pimps free reign.”

Strange, I already saw this video last week and then it was mentioned that it was in Sulawesi (Indonesia). I can't easily distinguish the language.

But hey, no matter where this is, it's just too sad! Serious abuse of your power! Those abusers of power need a good beating and I'm willing to give them that!

What cowardly bastards; all together against a few defenseless women who have suffered enough already. what a man. Whether Burmese or Thai, Vietnamese or Cambodians… violence against defenseless women must be dealt with harshly. Surely there will be a few people who recognize those men. Unfortunately, too much is covered up and hypocracy together with corruption is a poison that infects the entire Asian society. As long as this cannot really be tackled, this will always continue with impunity.

      Ridiculous !
      What a coward.
      It shocked me very much.
They are – in my opinion – criminals.
Too bad they never get caught and punished.....

I've just woken up [night shift] and I'm shaking with anger in my chair, my hands itching to give that bunch of cowards a beating themselves. I have no words for this.

What a coward!!! Even if the women have misbehaved, it should never be a reason to mistreat them.

Well, then just go back to the temple, on your knees with a flower bud and 3 incense sticks, then stick a 'gold leaf' on a Buddha statue, just put a 20 baht bill in the glass box and the sins are forgiven.

These are not cowards, this is just scum from the top ledge. Thought Thailand was THE country, luckily I found out…..

Indeed, I put it too mildly. They were mistreated because they probably brought in too few customers read : money. Scum!!!
