Home » News from Thailand » Songkran New Year holiday traffic: 52 dead and 431 injured on Monday
It's the same song every year. During the New Year holidays, Thais flock to their relatives to celebrate Songkran. On Monday, it killed 52 people in traffic and injured 431 people. The cause: speeding (37 percent) and alcohol consumption (27 percent).
Motorcyclists were involved in 80 percent of the accidents. From Saturday to Monday, police detained 3.085 people and removed 75 vehicles from the road. 255 drivers had to hand in their driving licences.
The government will step up traffic controls. Road safety spokesman Anan says checkpoints have been set up on all major roads. The police mainly check drivers of buses and minibuses. The percentage of drunk drivers must be reduced. Anan says that many breathalyzers are being taken.
Source: Bangkok Post
On day 2 it is very sad nationwide with a doubling compared to last year: http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/transport/932177/songkran-road-fatalities-nearly-double-2015-after-2-days
Here -in Phuket- 'we' have been able to keep the 2 for 0 days: http://www.thephuketnews.com/phuket-keeps-zero-road-death-toll-in-seven-days-campaign-57012.php
In fact, crazy.
Not even Songkran, which starts today, April 13, and already 3085 drink drivers arrested, wv 1984 for reckless driving; 75 seized vehicles; driving licenses have already been withdrawn from 255 people; 52 killed and 431 injured.
Songkran has yet to start and will take a day or so.
I hold my heart and don't leave my house.
The reasons why many people in Thailand are irresponsible in traffic, have often been discussed and known. In short, one does what one wants and the consequences, who cares !!!. This applies to a considerable number of road users. Foreigners are also to blame for this. More victims will follow. Still, I wish the Thai people a sincere happy New Year (for us it was a while ago and there were many deaths), but for many it will be a drama as usual.
And the counter is ticking………… tick, tick, tick. (Too sad for words).
Yes, the government's action does not have the intended success if it goes like this,
After 2 days, almost double the number of victims than in 2015.
I wonder if we can now say that it has been statistically proven that it is better to let drunks drive.
Just read that the number of dead is already at 116, and the number of injured well over 900. Read 20.30 pm where the number of dead and injured will of course increase every hour. If you read these numbers, you will see that this party has nothing to do with its real origin. TRAP TRAP!!!!
Remember that the box in the article only deals with day 1 of Songkran 2016. Also remember that Thais know this very well. Then remember that what was today will also be tomorrow! In a message dated today in English reporting, the facts are listed. Remember that at the end of December another suit is sewn from the same cloth: http://www.khaosodenglish.com/detail.php?newsid=1460532933
Sad, but true.
