Cambodia is taking off with UNESCO recognition at the expense of Thailand. It concerns the traditional Khon dance, which is now recognized as Cambodian heritage.

Thailand also wanted this recognition, but the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage has only approved the Cambodian application.

The difference between the Thai and Cambodian versions of this dance is barely noticeable. The Khon is a ritual dance with traditional costume and a mask. Often an episode is performed from the Ramayana legend, known in Thailand as Ramakien.

Thailand is to blame for this as in 2016, Culture Minister Vira said the country would not block Cambodia's application because the Khon dance is a tradition performed in many Southeast Asian countries.

The Bangkok Post also says this on the same day, November 29. Confusing.

UNESCO has listed Thai Khon as intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

The same dance, probably originating from the Hindu civilization via the Tamil.

As I make out, the Cambodian version was first recognized as world cultural heritage of a certain category and a day later the Thai version was added to another Unesco list.

The Thai version is on the “Intangible Cultural Heritage List” and the Cambodian on the Cambodian on the “Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding”.

Apparently both countries applied for a slightly different 'world heritage' category/list and both got their way: “Thailand had applied for Unesco listing of khon as “intangible cultural heritage” in a different category from Cambodia”

I don't hear about a zeperd in the Bangkok Post or The Nation.

In a THAI newspaper or other Multi-media ever ANYTHING about a Thai zeperd? I see a blizzard raging over Bangkok even sooner.
