Thai and foreign tourists should watch out for the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes), which is mainly active during the day. A bite from the mosquito can result in an infection with the dengue virus.

The province of Chonburi, which includes Pattaya, is already reporting 46.000 cases of dengue fever this year, which is expected to rise to 50.000 by the end of the year. That is even higher than the outbreak in 2015 when a total of 35.000 infections were reported. In the province, there are especially many reports from Koh Si Chang, Ban Bung, Banglamung and Pattaya.

Dengue (dengue fever) is an infectious disease caused by a virus. The virus occurs in (sub)tropical areas and is transmitted by mosquitoes.

Symptoms of illness

The incubation period for dengue virus is between 3-14 days (usually 4-7), following a bite from an infected mosquito. The majority of dengue virus infections are without symptoms. Non-severe dengue virus infections are characterized by the following symptoms:

  • Sudden onset fever (up to 41°C) with chills;
  • headache, especially behind the eyes;
  • Muscle and joint pain;
  • General malaise;
  • Nausea;
  • Vomit;
  • Cough;
  • A sore throat.

Non-severe dengue virus infections recover after a few days to a week. People can get dengue multiple times. A small proportion of infections progress to severe dengue with complications such as dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS). Without treatment, such complications are life-threatening.

Prevention

Dengue prevention is mainly aimed at preventing mosquito bites, especially in the early morning and afternoon when Aedesmosquitoes are active. Wearing covering clothing and rubbing the skin with a mosquito repellent based on DEET reduces the risk of infection. Sleeping under a mosquito net is also recommended.

  1. Ko says up

    My partner had Dengue last month and spent 1 week in hospital and that was in Hua Hin. He was the 4th admission to this hospital that month. It is always reported to the authorities! The dengue itself is indeed a very nasty kind of flu, at least that's how it feels. Especially in people who, for example, take medication for blood pressure, have lung problems, suffer from liver, kidneys, intestines, etc., it can be very dangerous, so be extra careful and visit a doctor. Our house and immediate surroundings were also disinfected against mosquitoes and mosquito larvae the next day. He can never get this form of dengue again, the other 3 forms are still according to the doctors. So be careful, especially if your health is already being maintained medically.
