Two foreign tourists were barely saved from drowning off the coast of the Similan Islands (Phangnga) yesterday. Both had run into trouble while swimming.

In the morning a Chinese woman (47) was taken out of the water in front of Koh 5 and after emergency care she was first taken by speedboat to Takua Pa hospital and later to Phuket Mission Hospital. A guide from Seastar Co says the woman must have been under water for about 3 to 5 minutes.

The other victim was a South Korean man. He got into trouble two hours later off Koh 4. There he was pulled out of the water by another foreigner. After receiving first aid, he was transferred to Thai Muang Hospital in Phangnga.

Every year dozens of foreign tourists drown during their holiday in Thailand. Some ignore the red flag that warns of a dangerous sea.

Respect for the Thai aid workers who rescued these tourists.
In Thailand these are usually unpaid volunteers.

Maybe I'm wrong but in my experience Phangnga and the Similan islands are two completely different areas.
Similan islands in the Andaman sea, and Phangnga in the Phangnga bay, east of Phuket.

True, there is certainly often a dangerous current around Phuket, but many tourists who drown recently are also mainly Asians who have never had swimming lessons and therefore drown faster anyway.
