A Russian millionaire couple, Anatoly Evshukov and his wife Anna, tragically died in a plane crash in Afghanistan. They were on their way back from a luxurious holiday in Thailand, where Anna became seriously ill.

Their private plane, en route to Moscow, suffered engine problems and crashed in a mountainous area. This mysterious accident, in which their son Vitali was on a different flight, has led to much speculation in Russia.

Anatoly, previously praised by a Putin governor, had arranged the flight for his sick wife's quick return to Russia. The pilot reported problems with the engines and fuel levels before the plane disappeared from radar. A planned stopover in Tajikistan was never made when both engines failed.

Although the four crew members survived the crash and sought help in a nearby village, there is a lot of distrust in Russia about the circumstances of the accident. The Russian government has announced an investigation into possible security violations.

This incident, the first since the tightening of Western sanctions on Russia's aviation sector, raises concerns about the impact of these sanctions on flight safety, given Russia's increasing difficulties in obtaining replacement parts.

  1. Mister BP says up

Even though it is always sad that people die as a result of an accident, this is very sad for me. A filthy rich Russian (not all of that money came in legally) and friend of the war machine Putin. That makes it difficult for me to gain sympathy. Feels bad for the son.
