The national telecom authority wants to add a “1” to existing telephone numbers in order to increase the number of fixed and mobile numbers by 550 million.

Numbers starting with 02 then become 012. For calls to fixed numbers in provinces, a 1 must be added. For example, 053-123 456 will be changed to 015-312 3456.

“The landline adjustment should take effect in 2021,” said Prawit Leesathapornwongsa, a commissioner of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC).

500 million numbers are reserved for the mobile market and 50 million numbers for fixed telephones. The NBTC telecom committee has already approved the new three digit prefix for landline numbers, Mr Prawit said.

Thailand wants to expand the number of telephone numbers because there is more demand due to the digitization of society.

I think thai also go through numbers quickly because tourists already get a sim at the airport as standard. Also, I have seen someone take a new number because the meaning of that number was more beautiful.
