Unfortunately, the Thai Chalita 'Nong Namtan' Suansane did not become Miss Universe 2016 in Manila, that title went to 23-year-old Iris Mittenaere, a dental student from France.

France's Iris Mittenaere has been crowned the 65th Miss Universe, taking over the title from Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach of the Philippines.

Miss Thailand, 21-year-old Chalita “Namtan” Suansane from Samut Prakan, reached the semi-finals, the best ranking for a Thai in many years.

When asked during the match which person she most admired, she replied through an interpreter that she admired the late King Bhumibol for his commitment to the Thai and Thailand.

    Just a little tidbit..

Mittenaere is originally a Belgian name, because it is a derivative of Demyttenaere. By the way, Iris Mittenaere was born in Lille, 15 km from Belgium.

So Miss Universe is a bit Belgian 🙂

What strikes me is that the Thai mass spoke through an interpreter. Isn't that a weakness in her PR? Or did all the other masses do the same in their own language?

Do I understand correctly that the Thai woman needed an interpreter, was her English not good? Where did I read this…
It's a good thing she wasn't chosen for this international job. And she is still so bright I read! Yes, if you don't speak English you won't get very far internationally.

      That's right Ger.
But what about the new French miss universe. She doesn't speak English either.

They can have both of my private lessons in English. (wink)
