Preparations to prevent drought are already in full swing in seven provinces. Sufficient water reserves must be built up for consumption and irrigation and fortunately this is the case, said government spokesman Sansern.

These are the provinces of Chiang Mai, Phitsanulok, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Sawan, Kanchanaburi, Chanthaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan. These are the most important provinces for the distribution of water to regions with a lot of agricultural land. In Nakhon Sawan, an attempt has been made to generate rain since March 1, which is very early.

The government has already asked farmers and residents to use water sparingly. Farmers have been urged to limit rice cultivation out of season to save water. In some places, it makes more sense to grow drought-resistant crops, says Sansern.

Somsak has asked the local leaders to start working on water management now in order to be better prepared for the expected drought this summer. He says there is also good news: the rainy season may start early this year. The first rains are predicted to fall as early as the end of next month.
