In the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat, the personal details of hundreds of expats were exposed on the internet for several hours by a weak security of a police immigration website.

Those who visited the website could view the names, nationality, passport number, professions and private addresses of foreign residents on an interactive map (see photo). The site was taken offline after complaints. It was a test of a new internal database of the police, said police commander Maj. Gene. Thanusilpa Duangkaewngam, an officer of the Provincial Immigration Bureau.

The information on the website www.adsum.in.th/index.php was not password protected and therefore visible to every internet user. A part that was protected with a password was easy to crack. You only had to type: 123456.

The leak became known through a message from journalist Andrew MacGregor Marshall who reported it on his Facebook page. He warned the foreigners living on Phuket and Koh Samui.

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit has ordered all data removed from the leaking website.
