With a great display of force, 250 soldiers, policemen and officials from Banglamung district unexpectedly appeared on the island of Koh Larn.

Arriving on the island, the units spread over different locations to check everything thoroughly and at the same time, such as the Tawaen, Thian, Samea and other beaches.

In addition to checking the drivers of baht vans and motorcycle taxis, the papers of seasonal workers were also examined and the entrepreneurs on the island were searched for drug-related matters. DNA samples were taken from the seasonal workers and personal details were recorded from the drivers, as well as from the drivers.

The aim of this action was to strengthen the confidence of visitors to the island. According to the story, the government of Chonburi province wanted to demonstrate in this way that the safety of tourists is of paramount importance.

It was not yet clear what they were really looking for.

I can't imagine that tourists feel very reassured by this kind of action.
An invasion doesn't really fit the holiday feeling.

Could this also be the future for expats?
Hand in your cheek swab at the immigration office when applying for a residence permit?

Such an action does not happen without a reason. It is good that there are checks and this is also urgently needed in this country where corruption is rampant and the laws are flouted on a large scale. The land of the free in the mind of many people present here with all its consequences. Don't forget that enforcing laws can only succeed if they are actually checked.

If you want to apply such an inspection thoroughly, it is important to carry out your approach on a large scale. Multiple islands at once. If you only do an island, the other islands will be informed by the people concerned by telephone and, if you go there later to look at criminal cases, you will not find anything of the sort. So from a tactical point of view it was well thought out.

There are advantages and disadvantages to military rule, but much more happens than before with democratically elected government. In times of threat, we are better off with this policy. That does make me feel safer. It will never be one hundred percent and there will always be pros and cons. So be it.
