The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation intends to have Tham Luang-Khun Nam Nang Non National Park in Chiang Rai recognized as an Asean Heritage Park (AHP).

The park became best known because twelve young football players and their coach were trapped in the Tham Luang cave for two weeks in 2018, which had been flooded. The area with deciduous forests is home to many rare animal and plant species.

The Thai cabinet approved the application at the end of June. The Asean Center for Biodiversity is also investigating the possibility of having the park recognized as an AHP.

ASEAN Heritage Parks is an organization dedicated to preserving areas of particular importance to biodiversity or unique to member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. ASEAN Environment Ministers signed the ASEAN Declaration on Heritage Parks on December 18, 2003.
