Home » News from Thailand » Short news » In Thailand, two children drown every day, minister comes with public campaign
The Ministry of Health is launching a public campaign to reduce the number of child drownings. By informing the public about the problem and providing information about first aid, it is hoped that the number of incidents will be reduced.
Health Minister Ratchata Ratchatanawin said the campaign will focus on three aspects:
- Prevention against drowning, encouraging children to learn to swim and first aid for drowning.
- Environmental stewardship, making water sources such as ponds safer.
- More publicity and information.
The minister announced that 807 children drowned last year. That is a decrease of 46 percent compared to the previous year. During the first four months of this year, 256 children have already drowned. The ministry's aim is to keep the number of drowned children below 770.

Perhaps an idea to also create school swimming in Thailand?
It is sad to hear that the number is still so high every year. Hope the campaign will help. After watching a previously posted article (video) you have tears in my eyes. https://www.thailandblog.nl/maatschappij/verdrinkingsdrama-thailand-dode-kinderen/ What strikes me is the resuscitation, which is not going as it should. A trained first aid and CPR course for police would also help reduce drowning deaths.
About time. I live in a village full of children and give some swimming lessons in my private swimming pool. Have already learned to swim about 30 of them. Gives satisfaction, but can tell you that listening to me leaves a lot to be desired. Listen now and then for no meter, but yes, that is not strange for a Thai. Now the parents want to learn it too, but I will think about that for a while.
Hi Edward, you are contributing to reducing the number of drownings among children. Hope you can be an example for other farang who have the same capabilities. Please continue. Thank you.
Hi Eduard (and anyone else who finds this an interesting topic),
I myself have been walking around for a while with the plan to start a swimming lesson project. I am a certified swimming teacher and have set up and led many social projects. Now that this need has also been recognized by the government, I think the time is right.
I myself was thinking of a project in which Dutch (qualified) swimming teachers come to Thailand for a month, for example, to give swimming lessons. Teaching in the morning, free time in the afternoon. Swimming instructors alternate consecutively, so that continuity is guaranteed.
Who wants to brainstorm with me and actually make a contribution?
We need:
– a pool of swimming teachers
– bathing water, this does not have to be a swimming pool, may also be a demarcated part of the sea
– a number of swimming teachers
– a coordinator
– publicity
– funds
Who oh who wants to join me?
Feel free to email directly: [email protected]
You see that the Thai can count. 4 children drowned in 256 months. In the remaining 8 months, therefore, double 512. Annual result then 768, well below 770.
Very ambitious minister!!! Thai parents are hardly interested in their children's school results, let alone their children's swimming results.
Incidentally, I am of course very much in agreement about the necessity.
I myself worked for years on the rescue service in Belgium, and also gave swimming lessons.
When I walk on the beach road in Pattaya I see children walking on those handcuffs, but also adults, but other dangerous things you see. I'm not surprised that someone drowns regularly.
Thailand should make a rescue service as we know it in Belgium and the Netherlands, rescuers on the water and in the water during the day, There are a few huts along the beach road with lifeguards, but they stand against the street, They look at the street , they are only called when it is too late. I would like to give swimming lessons in collaboration with a hotel chain. Also because you need a work permit.
