The Thai cabinet has decided to set up a new national emergency number. That becomes 911 and replaces the old 191.

The cabinet approved a bill for this this week, Maj Gen Sansern Kaewkamner said. The emergency numbers 191 and 1669 will continue to function for the police and the ambulance service for the time being.

Abuse of the 911 emergency number can lead to prosecution.

The cabinet had doubts about the numbers 911 (which is also used in the US) and 112, which is mainly used in European countries. The cabinet thought 911 was more appropriate, because people could confuse the number 112 with Section 112 (of the Penal Code), a lèse-majesté law with prison sentences ranging from three to 15 years.

A national committee, chaired by the Prime Minister, will be set up to manage the 911 emergency number.
