Malaysian police have found a mass grave with the remains of 24 people near the Thai border, Reuters news agency reports. According to the police, these are victims of human trafficking.

The route through the jungle in southern Thailand and northern Malaysia is widely used by people smugglers who bring migrants by boat from Burma and Bangladesh to Southeast Asia. Migrants are held in illegal detention camps, subject to torture or starvation – unless their families pay a ransom. In May, 139 graves were found near the border in Thailand, believed to belong to Rohingya refugees.

It is suspected that this also concerns Rohingya. The Rohingya are a Muslim minority of 800.000 people living in Burma. They are stateless and have no civil rights.
