The Dutch got an hour less sleep due to summer time in the Netherlands, but football fans in Thailand also had a short night. Together with 3,3 million million TV viewers, they saw the Orange draw 1-1 against Turkey on Saturday evening.

The Netherlands only came next to the Turks in injury time. The match was a disappointment to many. The Dutch played badly and it seemed that the game against Turkey, just like against the Czech Republic and Iceland, would end in a loss. That would mean a third defeat in the qualifying series, luckily Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored in injury time thanks to a hard kick from Snijder.

Afterwards, Hiddink called for realism. According to him, Turkey is a strong team and the Dutch national team is not as good as many people think after the last World Cup: “We are no longer at the top of Europe. We should not be mistaken about that”. Nevertheless, according to Hiddink, the Orange played below its capabilities tonight. “It was a bad game,” he admitted. The absence of Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben played a role. “It has a big impact if they are not there for the less experienced boys”.

Hiddink still sees opportunities for qualification. “Of course I will get this team up and running,” said Hiddink in front of the cameras of the ONGOING. "I don't know exactly how yet, but I don't feel despair."

They will be busy justifying the performance of the Dutch national team to the critical Thai football followers. And will Yolanthe now also become known in Thailand?

The Dutch 11 played football embarrassingly bad, almost as bad as the level in the Thai league, so you have to play very badly.
