Thrifty car rental opens branches in Bangkok and Pattaya
Car rental company Thrifty, part of Hertz, recently opened two new branches in Thailand. It doesn't stop there, because another seven branches will be opened this year.
The other seven branches will all be opened near airports: Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi) and (Don Muang), Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, Samui and Khon Kaen.
Thrifty wants to expand considerably in Asia, last year the rental company also opened branches in Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines. Hertz opened its first branch in Thailand in 2003.
A few years ago there were only three landlords at Suvarnabhumi Airport. That number has now more than doubled. It's going in the right direction. More competition puts pressure on prices. Good news for those who rent a car every year.
Another tip. I need a car for four weeks a year but rent for a month. That is cheaper than for four weeks. Returning early is never a problem. Sometimes I rent for six weeks, but I only agree to a proportional increase in the monthly price, so not the price of one month plus the price of two weeks, because then I pay a higher weekly price for the fifth and sixth week than the four weeks before.
I never buy off the deductible myself. This usually concerns an amount of approximately 5000 THB (approximately € 80). In the ten years that I rent a car in Thailand, I lost the deductible once. So that is much more beneficial.
This year I rented from the newcomer “Chic Car Rent” through RentalCars.com. Well organized and lower price. Do take pictures of any damage, including the interior (eg stains or dirty upholstery). I went back twice to have the pick-up report adjusted. They even offered another car because of stains on the upholstery. Also the deposit (limit restriction on my credit card) was only 5000 THB.
So competition works very well.
