As expected, the new Thai king, Maha Vajiralongkorn, has pardoned tens of thousands of detainees. The release of the prisoners, most of whom are serving sentences of less than two years, will begin today.

The measure includes women who have received a first conviction, prisoners who have served one third of their sentence and disabled or sick prisoners.

The royal decree does not give exact numbers, but the head of the Penitentiary Administration, Kobkait Kasiwat, says that about 30.000 detainees will be released early. Another 70.000 others will receive a reduced sentence.

The 64-year-old Vajiralongkorn has been the new king of Thailand (Rama X) since December 1. The late King Bhumibol Adulyadej pardoned prisoners every year.
