The sacred oxen have boded well for the new year in Thailand at the annual Royal Plowing Ceremony at Sanam Luang in Bangkok. From the food and drink they were served yesterday, they chose in such a way that there will be enough water and food for the whole of Thailand and that the economy will flourish.

The ceremony also marks the start of the harvest season. King Vajiralongkorn was present for this important day.

The oxen could choose from seven delicacies including rice, maize and grass. They chose water and grass, symbols of sufficient water and abundant harvests. They also chose liquor, which means economic prosperity and thriving trade with other countries.

The choice of fodder and drink was made by two sacred oxen, while the Praya Raek Na (the lord of the plow) was responsible for the prediction of rain and rice yield through the choice of a folded cloth six kueb (approx. 25cm). The meaning of this is that the rice fields at lower lying places have a good yield, but the fields that are higher up have less.

Have yet to see this story actually come out before this year.
To me this is more like superstition and hocus pokus. What I did see again last Monday was that government officials had another paid day off.
And the ordinary Thai, the farmer, the construction worker, the factory worker, etc., etc., had to continue working on this day to make ends meet financially.

Beware of qualifying this annual ritual as superstition and hocus pocus.
Before you know it, because of insult, you have pizza on your pants for max. 15 years, because he takes it so seriously that he even flies back from his semi-permanent holiday address especially for it.
