The Government Savings Bank (GSB) has lost 12 million baht because Eastern European hackers have managed to hack a large number of ATMs. In response, GSB has disabled half of its payment terminals.

The 12 million baht were stolen from 21 ATMs in six provinces. In total, GSB has seven thousand ATMs from three manufacturers, only the ATMs of the Scottish brand NCR have been hacked. There are approximately 10.000 NCR ATMs in Thailand, including the 4.000 operated by GSB.

The criminals took the money after midnight between August 1 and August 8. They used a specially prepared debit card, which caused the ATM to dispense more banknotes than usual. According to the police, 25 people were involved in the thefts, operating in three teams.

NCR's ATMs will remain out of order until security is modified by the supplier. GSB customers did not suffer, the stolen money belonged to the bank.

According to the police, the gang was previously active in Taiwan, where they captured 100 million baht. The GSB has the perpetrators on images from surveillance cameras. The Thai police are hunting the perpetrators.

The Siam Commercial Bank also has ATMs from the same manufacturer NCR, but they are not worried because the bank has installed software that protects the system from hackers. To be on the safe side, the bank has asked NCR to improve security.

According to the police, foreigners are responsible for this and have already left the country?
Still, good police work done that they have a solution so quickly!
Of course because Thai are not criminals and do not do this!

Chris, the reason the police knew so quickly that the perpetrators were foreigners is very simple. All they had to do was read the ATM's hard disk. It contains all camera images of people who have used the ATM and linked to it, the actions they have performed.

Well, that's exactly what I meant! Viewing the camera images of each machine! Doesn't have much to do with good police work in my opinion!

What a strange response, what does this mean? According to the investigation, there are images of the perpetrators on the surveillance cameras concerned Eastern European hackers. Why should a reference be made again immediately to “Thai are not criminals and do not do this”. Eastern European hackers have also made a lot of money in the past at Dutch ATMs, which then installed custom software, so now they are looking outside Europe and this time it was Thailand's turn.

My Thai wife and also my Thai neighbors are fed up with the constant reference that they are always foreigners.
They think, and rightly so, that they should take a good look at their own doings!
Prawit Wongsawan in particular keeps talking about foreigners destroying Thai society and always assigning blame to one particular person!
Everyone has their own opinion Kareltje, but this reaction is not strange at all and maybe you should follow the news more often and you will get a different view of Thai society!
And the Thai are no holier than others is the message behind this!

    Well,

I recently saw people working with windows XP at immigration.
I will not be surprised if Barak Obama can see the "complete network" of the Thai government.

Perhaps this kind of thing will happen more often in Thailand.
I learned early as a child to clean up my bedroom 😉

Almost all ATMs in the world run on a program with Windows XP embedded.
