The manager of Santika Pub in Bangkok and a staff member of Focus Light Sound System Co have been sentenced to 3 years in prison for gross negligence.

They are held responsible for the fire on New Year's Eve 2008, which killed 66 visitors and seriously injured countless others. The light/sound company was fined 20.000 baht.

The two convicts and the company must pay 87 million baht in damages to the families of the dead and the injured. The Southern Bangkok Criminal Court acquitted four other defendants, including the lead singer of the band Burn, who was accused of lighting the fireworks that started the blaze. The two convicts were later released after posting 500.000 baht bail each. They have appealed the ruling.

The relatives expressed their satisfaction with the verdict. A mother who lost her only son: 'I am really delighted with the verdict. Every time I have left the court with my head bowed down, but today I have a glimpse of hope. […] I can't forget the pain of the loss. I know that everyone has to die one day, but not the way my son died, the way he was burned.'

Chairat Saeng-arun, lawyer for the victims, says he will use yesterday's Criminal Court ruling to strengthen the civil suit before Phra Khanong Civil Court. The court will rule in December.

With all due respect, what a statement. The manager is jailed and the owner escapes unscathed! The world upside down. The other party will be fined 20.000 bht (paid with a smile). A parent is satisfied with the verdict, why? Because she gets paid 1.3 million baht????? How long will it take for those 87 million bht to be paid? Don't see that amount in cash on the account of a manager. Maybe there is more to get from the owner? Owner may be an important person in Bangkok? Just leave them out. Is Dr
son dr life no longer worth ??? They have been found guilty of the death of 66 guests, but are released on bail for more than 10.000 euros. So you see, Thai justice is one thing in itself!
