Chinese tourists are canceling their planned holidays to Phuket in large numbers after 47 tourists from China died in the Phoenix disaster on July 5.

About 7.300 rooms in 19 hotels have been cancelled. Kongkiat Khuphongsakorn, of the southern hotel association, said yesterday that the booking rate of hotels near Patong beach fell by 80% – 90% after the incident. In other places in the province, this percentage is 50%. In addition to Chinese visitors, hotel reservations have also been canceled by foreigners from other countries.

Kongkiat says the government's efforts to review security measures for all modes of transport will play a vital role in regaining the trust of foreign travelers.

Prime Minister Prayut has ordered an in-depth investigation into the cause of the disaster.

In Thailand, the well is filled in when the calf has drowned, but then the same well is quickly lost sight of. It was therefore a terrible event and understandable that China is now dropping out with their tourist flow to Thailand, we would do nothing else.

Won't be the first time that a thorough investigation has been announced.
It will happen, but so little is done about it.
Lots of ideas and lots of hooting, but the final implementation stranded on enforcement.
You see that with so many actions by the police, it has the attention for a while and after a month or 2 it relaxes and everyone goes back to their business as we have done for many years.

It is not the first time that the Chinese have failed. After the zero dollar tour affair it was the same thing.
However, tourism is declining more and more in my opinion. The Russians have also stayed away.
    Surrounding countries benefit from this.
Somehow more needs to be done to make the land of smiles a reality again.
More customer-friendly and many guesthouses will also have to refurbish their accommodation.
A turnaround which has shown an enormous change in yangon myarmar in 3 years.
Chinese are still an important source of income, although it is also run by Chinese in Thailand

If people used their common sense this would not happen.
Sailing out in bad weather and boats that don't deserve the term boat floating coffins are some boats.
We have erased boat trips from our program for years.

Don't know what to think of these numbers. A decline of 80 to 90% in bookings of hotel rooms on Patong Beach because Chinese tourists cancel their holidays would imply that the hotels in question were almost completely occupied by Chinese. I can hardly imagine but who knows I'm wrong. I also cannot place the 50% drop in the rest of the province. What is the share of the Chinese in the total of tourists from all other countries? The shipwreck with 47 victims is terrible and I can understand that this has caused a lot of emotion among Chinese travelers. But practice shows that this emotion soon subsides and that business is soon back to normal. In 2012, the cruise ship Costa Concordia hit the rocks off the Italian coast, killing 32. Perhaps there was a dip for cruise holidays, but now they are more popular than ever. Unfortunately, sometimes a plane crashes, but the number of travelers worldwide by air is increasing every year. Of course, the Thai authorities should tighten the rules for boats with tourists and the control thereof, but I don't see that happening in the short term. More than an incidental measure in the form of a fine/imprisonment for the owner and captain of the Phoenix, the boat in which the Chinese fell as victims, will not be included.

The cause is unbridled greed and blatant disregard for other people's lives!
