Rice damaged by floods

The Thai government has begun paying 25 billion baht to farmers whose rice crops have been lost due to drought or floods. They receive 500 baht per rai. The Ministry of Agriculture has already determined who is eligible.

The BAAC will make the payments, for which a list has been drawn up with the names of 2 million farmers. The bank thinks it will take three days to complete this job. Until yesterday, 10,9 billion baht had already been paid to 1,7 million households. The harvest of about 2,5 million rai has been damaged by drought or floods.

Finance Minister Uttama says more measures are coming to help the rice farmers, such as extending the repayment period of debts and loans with low interest. The government has set aside 60 billion baht for this. In addition, duped farmers receive rice seeds for use in the next rice season.

I think there was a calculation error somewhere.

2,5 million rai damaged agricultural land due to drought or flood.

    2.500000 rai x 500 baht = 1,250,000,000 baht.

You are absolutely right, but you have to take all government published numbers in Thailand with a wagon load of salt.

For example, I wonder, how does one arrive at such a list so quickly? Can/should farmers register themselves, indicate how much rai land they own and how much of it is used for rice cultivation? And is that checked? And is that all arranged within a few months?

Furthermore, 2 million payments in 3 days…? How many civil servants are busy entering all these amounts? And superiors to check all these payments for correctness?

And 1,7 million farmers (85%) apparently receive THB 10,9 billion, which is about 45% of the total amount. This would mean that 15% (300.000) of all farmers receive 55% of the total amount, or on average more than 7,3 times more than their colleagues. Sound logical. However… ?!

my girlfriend in Isaan tells me for an estimated value of 300 tons of rice, she doesn't get 60000 baht for fertilization!

Therefore, and also for other reasons (less water consumption, higher yield, higher prices, less environmental impact) organic rice is the future, but many Thai farmers still do the same as their father and grandfather did… and they were already poor.

You and/or your girlfriend in Isan have miscalculated or used some zeros. 300 tons of rice with a total price of 60.000 baht would mean 0,2 baht per kilo !!! Although the price that the farmers get for the rice is much too low in relation to the costs and labor incurred, it is not 0,2 baht, not even 2 baht per kilo. In recent years, the price has fluctuated between 11 and 16 baht per kilo.

I live in a farming village near the border with Cambodia about 50 kilometers above the border town of Aranyaprathet in Sakaew province. In general, we are not affected by extreme weather conditions with major droughts or floods. This year, however, the rain held off for a very long time. The rice of farmers who had sown early in the season ended up on parched soil and turned yellow. We ourselves started a little later. When it stayed dry, we decided to pump water from our own water supply to our rice field. The next day it started to rain heavily and hasn't stopped since. Even the yellowed rice plants have been able to recover well and now look nice and green. Despite the fact that in the end it turned out better than expected, the payment of 500 baht was paid.
