Following the recent brawl between two rival groups of motorcycle taxi drivers on Saturday in Bangkok, which resulted in two deaths, the Department of Land Transport (DLT) will better monitor the stands and permits.

To this end, a mobile application will be developed with data about the drivers and on the basis of this it can be determined whether drivers are registered with the DLT. Passengers who have had to pay too much can complain via a special telephone number.

The two fighting groups with drivers would have been on an illegal stand.

Bangkok Governor Aswin has instructed all district offices to verify that drivers in their district are properly registered.

Just like with well-performing and low-rent shops/stalls, etc.: you will only become rich if you can sublet them for a substantial surcharge. Ditto with those orange vests - would bring in up to 100.000 bt!
    Typical Thai phenomenon.

Because there is a lot of negative noise to read here about motorbike taxis (see comments on article about the deadly brawl on Saturday), here is my story about what happened to me last week:
I took a motosai taxi from 36 soi Sukhumvit to Bangkok Baking Company restaurant, BBCO.
I understood that this would cost 400 bht (I thought it was ridiculously high but agreed)
Dropped off at soi 2 and paid 400 whereupon the man started spluttering and I understood he wanted more.
I ignored this and walked up the stairs and entered the restaurant. I could still hear sputtering behind me.
While I was waiting inside for my order, to my surprise and annoyance, the driver came to my table with stories that I didn't understand but thought I did.
The headwaitress, who has known me for 20 years, started talking to him while the man put 250 bht on my table. WHAT TURNED OUT? He told the waitress that the ride cost no more than 150 bht and he insisted on giving me back the overpayment!!!
    This may also be told!!
And I felt bad and ashamed.

Think it's more about hostile behavior towards other locations than wrong behavior towards customers or fellow employees. Have been on the motorcycle taxi about 15 times, all times fine. 1x even got my 20 baht back because I lost my cap on the way. Didn't have to.

But perhaps it would be useful to speak some taxi Thai? If you are in Thailand for longer than a single short holiday, you should be able to draw simple words. 0 to 9999, 'how much does that cost?' , 'that is (too) expensive/cheap' etc.

Even ignoring the tones for a moment (fie 555):

Hello, to X please. A) how much? B) how many baht?
“Sawatdie khap, au pai X na khap. A) thau rai? B) what use?”
400 thb? Very expensive! / 250 thb? Okay
“Sie-roi baat? Pheng make!” / “song-roi baat? Okay"
