Anyone who wants to travel by bus to the North or Northeast in three years' time will depart from a new location. The well-known bus terminal Mor Chit in the north of Bangkok is entering its last years of life.

The railways, owner of the land, need the area for the construction of the Red Line, a metro connection between Bang Sue (currently the terminus of the underground metro line from Hua Lamphong) and Rangsit.

The decision will soon be made where the new bus terminal will be built. Four sites are eligible: Muang Thong Thani, two sites in Don Muang and Rangsit at Thammasat University. Of the construction costs of 5 billion baht, 1,5 billion baht is earmarked for the purchase of the land. Private companies can subscribe to it next month.

This is followed by the tender for the design (September) and construction (March next year). If all goes well, the new terminal will be operational in three years. The new location offers space for 220 buses plus a gas station that should be ready in 2017.

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) needs the land on which the current bus station stands plus an adjacent car park, managed by Bangkok's public transport company BMTA, for the construction of the Red Line, a maintenance depot and a car park. The line should be completed in 2017. We are now waiting for permission from the NCPO.

  1. Daniel says up

For years I have heard that the Transport Company would move to Rangsit as a base for the North and Northeast. From the start, Mochit was already too cramped.
