More than 105 students became unwell after inhaling butyl acrylate yesterday. The toxic and highly flammable substance had leaked from a container ship moored in the deep-sea port of Laem Chabang in Chon Buri province.

At the hospital, students from four nearby schools were treated for breathing difficulties, dizziness, nausea and eye and skin irritations. Most had not inhaled much and were allowed to leave the hospital quickly, fourteen children had to remain for observation.

Butyl acrylate is a clear, colorless liquid with a fruity odor. It is used in paint, coatings, adhesives and many other industrial products. When inhaled in large quantities, it can cause damage to lungs and genitals.

The poison came from a container ship flying the Chinese flag. The leak occurred when tanks were unloaded. One of the tanks fell out of the crane grab and was damaged. Because the breach could not be easily closed, the ship was towed to the island of Nok, three kilometers from the coast.

The crew has been instructed to keep a close eye on the tank and to keep it away from sparks and fire, because then the thing will explode. She also has to make sure that the poison does not flow into the sea.
