The abolition of global health insurance coverage has been postponed for the time being. Most parties in the House of Representatives are against Minister Schippers' plan, NOS said.

The plan to have people take out additional insurance if they go to study or go on holiday outside Europe receives little support. Almost all political parties think it is too much hassle for too little savings. In addition, Minister Schippers cannot prove that the measure actually saves 60 million euros.

Minister Schippers asked for a postponement in the debate. She couldn't answer all the questions. The law should have been approved by both the House of Representatives and the Senate on July 1. Then the insurers, who also have serious objections, would have had enough time to adjust their products.

Due to this postponement, the measure will not take effect on 1 January 2017. The worldwide coverage as part of the health insurance will therefore continue to exist for the time being.

It is expected that this postponement will lead to a cancellation, especially because CDA, SP, D66, PVDA and PVV are against Minister Schippers' plan. Only the VVD still sees salvation in the plan.

In short: good news! I hear a sigh of relief here in Thailand…………

Fortunately, otherwise the premiums would have gone through the roof. Plus, it saves the hassle for the insurer and the insured about when coverage is/is not covered, etc.

Rightly so that this discriminatory measure will not take place for the time being! Moreover, I understand from the reports from health insurers that any savings of 60 million (which amounts to about 5 euros annually per insured person) are largely canceled out by the extra administration at these insurers.

Three years ago, during my vacation, I was admitted to the BKK hospital Pattaya for a week
due to a persistent heart rhythm disturbance and dangerously low blood pressure.
The treatment was incredibly good compared to the experience in the Netherlands.
The price of this was a quarter of what you have to pay for it in the Netherlands…
Where does our minister get her so-called 60 million savings from??
The umpteenth predictable miscalculation of our (wise) ministers…

Fortunately, that measure will not continue as it looks now. Travel insurance premiums had become much more expensive if you also wanted to insure medically.

In which a small country can be big: demolish everything, cut back, collect money.
See France: central government dial-in numbers from Thailand for sick French compatriots, who are then completely relieved by French assistance.
An important criterion for remaining registered in NL is basic health insurance, for which people also pay taxes in NL, while it would often be better to be registered in Thailand in terms of taxes.
If that certainty about health insurance disappears, then it will be really worth considering for the long holidaymakers to leave for tax purposes (you can always keep a house in NL). Does the NL state save tax revenue, or: shoot the State in its own foot. Penny wise, pound foolish.
Glad the plan is off. Hopefully forever!

If you really pay the tax in Thailand that you should pay, this is often still disappointing compared to the Netherlands.
Do not forget that the social insurance portion in the Netherlands is often larger than the tax portion.
In Thailand you only pay tax, for which you get nothing in return except for the street in front of the door, an immigration office and a tax office.
So it seems lower, but you no longer build up AOW and you also lose your insurance, in case you should be entitled to those social insurances.
Something like I live cheaply in my owner-occupied house, because I canceled my home insurance.

Presumably the state has not really provided for the Thailand visitors. If people thought they could collect money here, they would undoubtedly have other large groups of long-stayers in mind. Guys who are actually a kind of longstayers in the Netherlands as well. There was and is apparently a lot of fraud by a certain group of people. Also by hospitals, by the way. The insurer usually wants to know in which hospital you are as soon as possible. Before you know it, they have become a cash cow again.
