With the promise that the consular services will be expanded with a one-stop shop, Minister Halbe Zijlstra of Foreign Affairs has announced the Vakantiebeurs open for 2018. He did this together with Mayor Jan van Zanen of Utrecht.

The Vakantiebeurs can be visited until Sunday 14 January in the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht. Yesterday the fair was only open to trade visitors.

The minister emphasized how important it is that the Dutch go on holiday well prepared, all the more so as the destinations are becoming increasingly exotic.

“The Dutch are a travel-loving people. You come across them in the farthest corners, all year round,” says Zijlstra. And that is good news, he told the exhibitors of the Vakantiebeurs. With an economy on the rise, the number of travel movements will only increase. Zijlstra went the extra mile with his appeal to everyone 'to go out and have a good time.'

Good preparation

According to Zijlstra, good preparation is half the battle. “Thousands of professionals work hard to ensure that travelers have a great holiday and return home safely afterwards. In preparation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has 220 travel advice on offer.

If things do go wrong, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs often takes action. Last year, the ministry helped 2300 people in need. Even the involvement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has its limits, says Zijlstra. “For example, when a traveler from Tanzania called the ministry with a cry for help that a lion was walking next to her tent.”

  1. Fransamsterdam says up

'Oh, we love to travel, and it's only going to increase, and that's good news, go out, travel on, you can contact the government for preliminary advice, and if something goes wrong you call just talk to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we will help you out and then everything will be fine. Unless there's a lion in your tent. Whahahahaha.',
    said the Minister, in summary.
Nothing about the size of the footprint or a slot shortage at Schiphol, whistling into the future, praising his own Ministry to the skies and closing it with a smile on your hand, so that the atmosphere to raise something critical is completely missing. Well written speech, for a politician.
