The Rail Transport Department is investigating the possibility of making a ticket for the metro cheaper. This could be done through subsidies or tax measures. A proposal for this will be submitted to the new government.
Passengers in Bangkok pay considerably more than, for example, in Singapore or Hong Kong, according to figures from the TDRI. In Bangkok, a subway ride costs an average of 67,4 baht, in Singapore 25,7 baht and in Hong Kong 46,5 baht.
Other countries may subsidize public transport with lower fares. Thailand could also do that with a special subsidy pot, according to a spokesperson for the RTD. The money for this could come from the windfall tax, which is levied when residents benefit from higher land prices thanks to new rail projects. Getting the money from other sources is not a solution because then everyone has to contribute to the subsidy.
