Today in Bangkok Post there is an article about the alarming increase in the number of infections with Syphilis. Between 2009 and 2018, the number increased from 2-3 to 12 per 100.000 inhabitants, with the largest increase in the 15-24 age group.
A story of a 15-year-old girl who is pregnant with twins is circulating on social media. Her partner is also 15 years old. Aside from being very young, she is also found to have syphilis. Earlier this month, the Department of Disease Control's Bangrak STI Center reported a drastic increase in syphilis diagnoses on their Facebook page. Thanason Thummakul, an infectious disease specialist, confirms the increase, which he attributes to the sharp rise in unprotected sex. Teenagers and men who have sex with men are particularly affected.
Infection occurs through unprotected sexual contact. Thanason points out that people diagnosed with syphilis should also be tested for HIV because both diseases are passed on in the same way.
Thanason advises to use condoms. Early detection and early treatment is also essential.
