Thai hospitals are increasingly confronted with violence
Thai hospitals report an increase in violent incidents. Emergency departments in particular are more often confronted with violence such as fights and vandalism, often by patients under the influence of alcohol or drugs or by rival gangs visiting opponents in the hospital.
A study by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Thailand noted at least 2012 violent incidents in emergency rooms between 2020 and 66. Recently there were two serious incidents in a hospital in Samut Prakan, causing considerable damage and threats to hospital staff.
The Medical Council of Thailand devoted a meeting to the problems on Thursday. Representatives from the Ministry of Health, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Thailand, the Attorney General's Office and the Royal Thai Police are jointly looking at how to address this issue. The current measures, which consist of deploying guards, an alarm button for personnel, safety exercises and self-defense training, appear to be insufficient.
The government is thinking of a different layout of rooms, double doors with controlled access, more CCTV cameras and a new law to protect medical personnel.
