Satun province is bracing for a peak tourist influx as Tarutao National Marine Park reopens after a 5-month closure.

The beaches in the park such as Koh Adang, Koh Rawi and the many dive sites were closed from May 16 to October 14 so that nature could recover.

The local tourism board expects the number of tourists in Koh Lipe to increase by 2019-2020% this high season (November 8 to April 10). Last year, some 400.000 came to the area. The occupancy rate of the 3.500 rooms in Koh Lipe was 70-80% at the start of the high season, an increase of 20% compared to the low season.

About 70% of tourists in Satun are Thai, mostly from Hat Yai in Songkhla and the three southern frontier provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala.

    What am I reading?

So in 5 months time these nature reserves have to recover? How can they make it up. Corals take decades to recover with the question of whether recovery is still possible. What nonsense.
However, something else is going on! As we know, tourism in Thailand is declining dramatically, and that needs to be restored. Dream On.

    Dear Editor,

I was recently in 'Bang saray' which is a military base (about twenty kilometers outside Pattaya) and is only open during certain times.
I find this a very strange way of thinking that this is for the recovery of the beach, coast, coral, etc.
This is maintained by the entrance fee, which many find expensive.

Of course you can't maintain nature if there are 'mountains' of busloads coming to the beach
entertainment. (people will be a rotten concern).

It is not allowed to dive on this stretch of beach, nor to sail with jed skis or boats.
Where you can enjoy a 'good meal and a delicious refreshing drink'.

    Wonderfully quiet, with mixed nationalities.

So that's how parts of Thailand are protected and preserved.
    Strange story.

    Yours faithfully,

    Erwin
