Thailand's southernmost border at Songkhla reopens
The Sadao immigration checkpoint on the border with Malaysia reopened to travelers today. More than a hundred Malaysians registered through the Thailand Pass system to re-enter Thailand.
The checkpoint in Songkhla province, the main land border crossing point with Malaysia, finally came to life after two years, having previously been closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Sadao border crossing opened at 5am and there was a steady stream of tourists from Malaysia. Travelers were required to present passports, Covid-19 vaccination documents and proof of reservation and payment for SHA extra plus hotels. Then a PCR test was administered and they had to wait four to six hours for the results. Some travelers had not pre-registered for Thailand Pass system and thought that just showing a passport was enough. They were disappointed because they were refused entry.
Sadao is a tourist town on the border with the state of Kedah in Malaysia. Seven of the city's 25 hotels have received SHA extra plus certification. Most visitors who enter through checkpoint on Friday have a family in Thailand or have a business here.
Ratchata Samranchalarak, head of the Songkhla Tourism and Sports Bureau, said the southern province is ready to welcome tourists again. A coordination center has been set up to assist visitors.
Checkpoints in other provinces along the southern border will also reopen from April 1.
