As the Songkran Festival approaches, excitement increases among Thai residents and international visitors alike, all eager to immerse themselves in the celebration of the traditional Thai New Year.
Famous for its lively water fights and deep cultural value, this festival attracts large crowds of people who want to participate in the festivities. This period also coincides with the time when many people travel to their hometown. To ensure a safe and enjoyable Songkran, experts have put together some essential tips.
Travelers are advised to plan their trip well, taking into account road conditions and possible traffic congestion, to ensure a smooth travel experience. It is crucial for drivers to get enough rest to avoid fatigue, which can lead to accidents. Assembling a first aid kit with standard medications for common ailments, as well as a thorough check of the vehicle paying special attention to essential components such as the battery, tires, lights, brakes, and radiator, is highly recommended. It is also important to keep a list of emergency numbers on hand, including numbers for the police, tourist police, traffic information line and emergency medical services, in order to respond appropriately to unforeseen circumstances. Taking out accident insurance can provide additional peace of mind.
The water fights during Songkran are undoubtedly one of the highlights, but they require caution to avoid health problems. Participants are encouraged to stay hydrated, wear protective clothing such as hats and sunglasses, and use sunscreen. Experts recommend avoiding the hottest part of the day for water activities and limiting the use of alcohol and ice in water fights to minimize health risks. After the festivities, it is important to bathe quickly and change into dry clothes, and look for well-ventilated areas to relax and recover.
For those who are particularly concerned about their skin health during the celebrations, regularly applying sunscreen every two hours and choosing protective clothing can significantly reduce the risk of sunburn and skin damage. Playing in areas with clean water and avoiding unsafe materials such as certain types of chalk is recommended. Applying aloe vera gel can provide relief for sunburn.

I live in a village in Nongkhai, no water from the tap for most of the day, but luckily there is enough water to throw around.
Last year I ended up in this revelry for the first time in Pattaya.
Until then, know how to avoid it.
It was a cheerful event, but after three days I was done with it. Changing clothes/showering two or more times a day because you got tired of your soaking wet clothes. Haha.
Still discovered a trick. Walk on the street with a smartphone visible in your hand. That device is sacred in this country. “I am on phone”… And you stay reasonably dry!
Best regards,
I know an even better trick….stay away 😉
