It is immensely popular with tourists and day trippers Maya Bay will remain closed to the public for at least another two years. In June 2018, Maya Bay closed to allow the flora and fauna to recover from the damage caused by mass tourism. It beach attracted 5.000 tourists a day.
The bay, which measures only 250 by 15 meters, has become best known thanks to the film 'The Beachwith Leonardo DiCaprio.
According to maritime biologist Thon of Kasetsart University, who is also a member of the park committee, the long period of closure is also intended for the construction of some facilities such as a harbour, toilets, accommodation for supervisors and a walking platform.
When the bay reopens to the public, the number of day visitors will be capped at 2.400 in high season. Visitors have to buy an entrance ticket online, which also has the advantage that all entrance fees end up in the state coffers and not in the pockets of shady characters.
The other islands and beaches in Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park will remain open.
