On New Year's Day, all bars and pubs in Thailand are allowed to remain open until 06.00am. This exceptional measure, intended to stimulate tourism, was announced by Traisuree Traisoranakul, spokeswoman for the Ministry of the Interior.
Traisuree also revealed that Home Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has signed a regulation allowing licensed entertainment venues in Bangkok, Chon Buri, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Ko Samui to remain open until 15am from December 04.00. This is an extension of the normal closing time, which was previously 02.00 a.m.
In addition, Minister Anutin has instructed all relevant departments of the Ministry of Interior to work closely with local authorities, such as the police and security services. This is to ensure the safety of visitors to entertainment venues and to maintain public order, with special attention to the people living near these venues. Traisuree also stressed that police have been instructed to strictly enforce the laws against drunk driving.
