The Maya Bay in Noppharat Thara Beach National Park on Phi Phi Islands is temporarily closed so that nature can recover. It has been almost completely destroyed by mass tourism, the coral reefs have been damaged by boats that anchor there.

Maya Bay was made famous by Danny Boyle's 2000 film 'The Beach'. This rendition starring Leonardo DiCaprio was filmed in Thailand. The recordings were made on Phi Phi Leh in the southwest of Thailand (Andaman Sea).

During the high season, five thousand people visit the beach every day, double what it can handle. The tour operators, who have been consulted, have no objection. For the time being, a closure is planned from July to September this year. Measures are also being taken to reduce the number of visitors.

Yung Island in the same park has been closed for two years. The maritime environment is recovering remarkably quickly.

I can understand if I saw how many people walking around there. A wonderful excursion, definitely worth doing 🙂
