British student Lucy Hill (see photo) of 21 is in a hospital in Thailand after a moped accident. She has already had several surgeries. She needs blood transfusions to stay alive, but the hospital doesn't have enough of her rare blood type A- in stock.

Her travel companion Lauren Hall therefore placed an online appeal to backpackers who are in the area. 'Do you have the same blood type? Then come to the hospital in Chiang Mai and donate your blood.'

Lauren told the BBC that the blood had run out at the hospital. “It was very scary, that's why I put the call online. She is in critical condition in hospital, but she is stable and we still need blood.”

Dutchman

The Dutch Tjakko Dijk wanted to donate blood, he has blood group A-, but ran into the regulations in Thailand. Homosexuals are not allowed to donate blood there. In the Netherlands, gays are only allowed to donate blood if they have not had sex for a year.

“Very unfortunate,” says Tjakko. “You would expect that in these life-threatening situations those rules would not apply, but they did.” Despite that, this morning Tjakko's arms had goosebumps: “That so many people responded to the call to donate, that is fantastic to see.”

Accident

Lucy was in a moped accident, wore a helmet, but ended up with bleeding in her brain and severe injuries to the rest of her body, Lauren says. Lucy's blood type, A-, is very rare in Thailand, but more common in Europe. That's why they focus all their hopes on western backpackers. And they respond en masse: “I don't even know how many people have already come to the hospital to help Lucy. If it doesn't run into the tens, it will run into the hundreds."

According to messages on Facebook, there are now queues in front of the hospital. Lauren is overwhelmed by the support she is getting now. “It's phenomenal. After Lucy's accident I felt lonelier than I've ever felt, but all this help is fantastic."
