Bangkok and Chiang Mai are among the thirty most expensive cities for expats in Asia. Ashgabat in Turkmenistan is the most expensive city in both the world and Asia, according to an ECA International survey of the cost of living for expats.
Bangkok ranks 28th, just above Chiang Mai. Bangkok ranks 60th and Chiang Mai 142nd in the world ranking of the most expensive cities for expats.
According to the study, Bangkok has lost its appeal for budget-conscious expats, as the city has dropped 64 places in the past five years.
ECA International says that economic growth and increased foreign investment (before the corona crisis) have made Thailand more expensive for expats. Then the strong baht is added.

Not so surprising if you read the whole story:
1. It's about working expats, not retirees;
2. It is mainly about the cost of living and all more fixed costs are not taken into account because they are included in an expat employment package (rent, utilities, insurance, car, school for the children)
3. People have compared the prices of leading an international lifestyle: no pad thai and Chatuchak, but Starbucks and the supermarket of the Siam Paragon.
